A Long Beach police officer shot and wounded a man who authorities said was armed with a knife and came toward the officer.
The shooting occurred about 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of the Colonnade in Naples, a tony district on the east end of Long Beach.
Police were called to a home there after a man who appeared to be intoxicated tried to enter the home’s front door, Long Beach police spokeswoman Marlene Arrona said.
An officer arrived and “confronted the man, who was cutting his own throat with a knife,” Arrona said.
The officer sought to coax the man into surrendering, the spokeswoman said, and at that point the man “advanced toward the officer,” leading to the shooting.
The man was was taken to the hospital; his condition was unknown. His identity was not released.
No officers were injured in the incident, which is under investigation by the police department as well as the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
