Pretty Fast for Team Snowden and Greg Hickman’s exciting colt Pierata set the summer carnival alight with their respective wins and Calanda looked likely to complete a clean sweep for the visitors when he loomed large in the straight. Sunshine Coast trainer Darryl Hansen had watched his talented three-year-old Bring It Home Pop swamped by Pierata 40 minutes earlier and for a good part of the straight it seemed Monsieur Gustave would be dealt the same fate. Calanda looked to have Monsieur Gustave covered, but the photo finish went the way of the local. I just love him,” Hansen said. “I knew he’d fight, but on the work he did early and under the 58kg, it was a huge effort to stick his head out at the end.” Hansen praised apprentice Tiffani Brooker, who has now won three stakes races on Monsieur Gustave. “She knows him back to front now and they get on so well together,” he said. The Group 3 win equalled Brooker’s career best, following her Gynsynd Classic win on Dreams Aplenty in April. Brooker said Monsieur Gustave is a creature of habit. “He did the same thing last start. He has this high cruising speed but then hits a flat spot,” she said. “After that he digs deep and just keeps finding. I’m just so appreciative of the owners having the faith to keep me on this horse.” Hansen is now eyeing off a Summer Crown bonus, but knows he’s also going to have to beat the handicapper. “He keeps having hurdles put in front of him and he keeps jumping them,” he said. Chris Munce was frustrated by the narrow defeat to stable newcomer Snoopy, who was the hardluck story of the race. Snoopy travelled behind Monsieur Gustave to the turn, but had to wait for a crucial 100m to ease to the outside. By the time he had clear running, he had two lengths to make up and on a day where it was difficult to make ground, Snoopy did a huge job to only just go down in a three-way photo. Last year’s
