Former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin has emerged as the front-runner for the UCF job, with the Knights moving quickly to replace Scott Frost, multiple sources close to the program told the Orlando Sentinel. UCF officials declined to confirm Sunday Sumlin will be the Knights’ next head coach, but an announcement is expected to come soon, according to sources. The UCF affiliate was the first to report the news Sunday morning. Sumlin, 53, built Houston into a Conference USA power before making the leap to Texas A&M in 2012. During his tenure with the Aggies, he coach coached Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Johnny Manziel. Sumlin spent six seasons with the Aggies, going 51-26 and earning bowl bids every year. The school ultimately fired him after Texas A&M’s 45-21 loss to LSU last month primarily because he could not turn the program into a perennial national championship contender. Sumlin immediately became a popular candidate for college football coaching vacancies. UCF athletics director Danny White told reporters Saturday he planned to move quickly on his head coaching search, with the early football signing period looming Dec. 20. White said he and Frost began having conversations about his coaching future in early October as the program continued to build national attention. According to sources, White hired Parker Executive Search well before Frost officially resigned Saturday to help him identify candidates in the event Frost choose to leave. Frost officially addressed the team about his resignation just hours after the Knights defeated Memphis 62-55 in double overtime to earn the American Athletic Conference championship and finish the 2017 regular season as the only undefeated team in the nation. Frost boarded a private plane to Nebraska with assistant coaches Erik Chinander, Ryan Held, Jovan DeWitt, Mario Verduzco, Mike Dawson, Greg Austin, Barrett Ruud and Travis Fisher. Frost will be formally introduced as the new head Cornhuskers coach Sunday afternoon. UCF offensive coordinator Troy Walters is the Knights’ interim coach and will lead bowl game preparation.
