Deep cleaning underway at all Homer 33C schools

Maintenance and custodial crews are hard at work getting the schools ready for the 2016-17 school year.

As soon as students left for summer break on June 3, workers began emptying each classroom so they could clean, polish and wax the floors to a high sheen.

Then, before moving the desks and chairs back into place, workers diligently wipe each piece down with cleaner and disinfectant. The same solutions are used on every locker (all 1,500 of them) at Homer Junior High and Hadley Middle School.

"We clean everything from top to bottom," said Glen Wysong, the district's director of buildings and grounds. "It's a labor-intensive job," he added, "but well worth the effort. By the time our crews finish, the schools look new."

Crews are on schedule to complete their work in early August, giving teachers time to unpack and prepare their classrooms and bulletin boards. The first day of school is Aug. 22.
