National park tips: These big Yosemite trees are off-limits until next year

If your heart is set on a stroll through Yosemite National Park’s Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias, wait until next year. It's closed for restoration until spring 2017.

In the meantime, remember that Sequoia and Kings Canyon have plenty of big trees — including General Sherman, said to be the largest tree by volume in the world. And those parks are closer to Southern California.

In honor of  this year’s National Park Service centennial, the Travel section is posting 100 park travel ideas and tips based on trips staff travel writer Christopher Reynolds has taken, along with photo-op advice from Times photographer Mark Boster. We’ll post one per day through Dec. 31.

Yosemite official stepping down amid harassment allegations

The superintendent of Yosemite National Park on Thursday announced that he is stepping down amid an ongoing federal investigation into allegations of a hostile work environment in which employees, particularly women, are bullied, belittled and marginalized.
